Chapter 11

It wasn’t easy for Leda to find out much about anything. She was so cut off in the house. She asked her mother a bit about him, but Mami didn’t really know him, she had just heard about him. He was very rich, she said, hoping that would cheer Leda up. Leda wanted to know how he had become so rich. Her mother knew he had a petrol station, and thought that must be the reason. But when Leda asked her friend Elona about Mr Gjoni, the next time she came round, she had another answer.

“Yes, he has a petrol station, but haven’t you heard about the pyramid scheme?”

“No,” said Leda, puzzled. “What’s a pyramid scheme?”

“There’s a special company,” Elona explained. “It’s a bit like a bank, but better. You put money in and they give you it back with lots of interest – you can get back twice or three times what you put in, or even more! And you don’t have to do anything, you just put the money in and wait.”

“That sounds wonderful!” said Leda. “Why doesn’t everybody do it?”

“Everybody is!” said Elona. “To tell you a secret…” She leaned forward, her over-long hair falling on Leda’s shoulder, and whispered: “My father has sold all his land, and his sheep, and he’s putting all the money into the scheme. He says in a few months he’ll be able to buy it all back, and have loads of money left over!”

“But is it safe?” said Leda. “How does it work?”

“It must be safe, or people wouldn’t be doing it,” replied her friend. “And just look at Mr Gjoni – he’s made piles! He put his money in right at the beginning, and took it out again when he got the interest. But soon everyone will be nearly as rich as Mr Gjoni, you’ll see!”

Leda wasn’t sure what to think about the money-making pyramid scheme. If it was true, then it sounded great, but how could it could it work? Where would all the money come from? She asked her mother about it, but she didn’t find out much.

“I don’t know about that sort of thing, dear. I’ve heard about it, and I know lots of people are putting their money into it, but I don’t know how these things work. One thing I do know, we haven’t got any spare money to put in, even if it was paid back a hundred times!”

Leda sighed. When her mother said things like that she felt as if she ought to marry Mr Gjoni, since he had so much money. But could she really give up Jesus, even to make her family rich? She wished she could talk it all over with Suela, but there was still no word. She phoned Suela’s parents and got her uncle’s number in Tepelena. She tried calling two or three times, but every time someone else would answer the phone and tell her that Suela was fine, but she was busy just now. Each time Leda asked them to leave a message for Suela to call her, but she never got a call back.
